What are my basics to keep in the house?
When I became gluten intolerant (25 years ago) supermarkets didn’t stock gluten-free items, and so I soon learnt to cook! These days we have lots of gluten-free products but have you ever checked the labels? They can be quite unhealthy so take a look before you purchase. I still prefer to make my own food. By making your own, you can also customise them to how you like them, and you have higher control over what you are eating.
You will want to stock your fridge freezer and cupboards with gluten-free items. This is what I normally store:
Fridge / Freezer
fish, chicken, lean meat
eggs
dairy-free (for me) foods such as butter, milk, cheese
fruit (fresh and frozen)
vegetables (fresh and frozen)
Store Cupboard
canned or dried beans, peas, lentils
canned tomatoes
canned meat such as salmon, tuna
breakfast cereals
crackers, crispbread, rice cakes
gluten-free pasta and noodles and taco shells
rices such as basmati, jasmine, red
gluten-free flours - rice, tapioca, cornflour, potato flour, almond, buckwheat, millet
popping corn, nuts, dried fruit
gluten-free chutneys, jams and dressings etc.
gluten-free snacks such as pretzels
gluten-free gravy, stock cubes
cooking oils
gluten-free baking items such as baking powder, xanthan gum (read part 2 on how to use xanthan gum)
